Honouring Vimy

Honouring Vimy This year, for the first time, Canada declared April 9th a national day of remembrance to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. At Vimy Ridge, Canadians did what other Allied forces during the First World War could not; they stormed the ridge and took a long-held German stronghold. We also are pleased to report that a $1.8 million contract recently was awarded to help restore the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. The Vimy Memorial restoration is part of a $30 million initiative funded by the Government of Canada to restore and rehabilitate 13 First World War battlefield memorials in Europe.

This past winter, three talented artists from Prince Edward Island took first prize at the annual Canada Snow Sculpture Competition in Ottawa for their impressive work called The Spirit of Canada at Vimy. It took 43 hours to craft the 40 tonne block of snow.
