Creation of a New Minister’s Commendation for Veterans

Charlottetown – The Honourable Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Minister of Veterans Affairs today announced that Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, has authorized the creation of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. The Commendation will be awarded to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of veterans and/or individuals who have contributed to the remembrance of the contributions, sacrifices and achievements of veterans. It is intended primarily for veterans, but in rare circumstances may also be awarded to non-veterans.

"Throughout the years, veterans have given of their time and devotion in a number of ways," said Minister Pagtakhan. "These contributions are not always recognized and the time has come to honour the work of some of these unsung heros. This Commendation will go some way to giving public recognition to such service."

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation consists of a bar, typically worn below official decorations on a veteran's blazer, a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate. A limited number will be awarded and recipients will be chosen annually by a selection committee. Nomination forms will be available on-line at www.vac-acc.gc.ca and at District and Regional Offices of Veterans Affairs Canada by mid-March. The deadline for nominations for 2002 is April 30.
