Ladies and gentlemen:

As I listened to the beautiful voices of the choir, with their moving words, I couldn't help but recall that as we meet here, Canadian Forces personnel are in harm's way in other parts of the world. Those of you who watched the Olympics two weeks ago probably saw those young troops take time out to cheer on our victorious Canadian hockey teams, just as we all did. But they did it from Kandahar and elsewhere. After the game they had dangerous work to do. It also occurred to me that it is probable that some of them will need to call on us for our services here at Veterans Affairs. I know you will be ready for them.

As many of you know, throughout the years, Veterans have given of their time and devotion in a number of ways. Some speak in schools and organize special events to ensure the memory of their fallen comrades will never be forgotten and that all Canadians will remember the sacrifices that were made for our freedom. Some assist their comrades with health care issues and ongoing daily activities. Others provide friendship and support to family members of deceased Veterans. Many Veterans are effective advocates and provide a strong voice in representing Veterans issues.

These are only a few of the wonderful examples of the tremendous contributions Canadian Veterans have made to this nation. Imagine... after having left their families and the security of their homes to fight for the freedoms we enjoy today, Veterans continue to have an incredible impact on Canada, and on all Canadians.

The time has come to honour the work of some of these unsung heros and to recognize their tremendous contribution to their communities and our country.

To that end, I am very pleased to announce today the creation of a special commendation award. Her Majesty the Queen has approved the design of a special bar to be worn with decorations; it will be known as the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. The Governor General has now issued a Warrant creating this award which will be presented to those Veterans - or in special cases to civilians - who have performed commendable service to the Veteran community and/or those who represent commendable role models for their fellow Veterans. This is an award that is long overdue.

It is about saying "Thank You" to those Canadian Veterans who are true role models for their comrades, our youth and indeed all Canadians.

I invite ALL Canadians, from coast to coast to coast to nominate Veterans they think are deserving of this honour.

Without further ado, I would ask ...to join me in unveiling the design of the bar that will symbolize the Government of Canada's appreciation for these remarkable and selfless contribution.
