William Charles, Sgt
21st Battalion, 38th Battalion
C.O.C. (Canadian Ordinance Corps), R.A.F.

Personal Information: William Charles was born on June 16, 1892 in Glasgow Scotland. He was a railway freight clerk. He was single.

Military Movements: William Charles was enlisted into the C.E.F. on November 9, 1914 with no previous experience in any other service. Enlisted into the 28th Battalion, he arrived in Matagama, England on June 15,1915. He then embarked for Folkestone, France on September 15, 1915. After serving in the 28th battalion for several months he was transferred into the 38th battalion. From here he engaged in combat with this battalion until he was transferred into the C.O.C. Here he was promoted from Private to Sargent. After serving in the Canadian Ordinance Corps he was later transferred into the R.A.F. This is where he spent the remainder of the war until he was discharged in December 1918. (Archives)

Medical Records: On January 8, 1916 William Charles was admitted to Shornecliffe Hospital from being wounded at Dischbusch on December 29 1915. He was diagnosed with a shrapnel wound to the groin (right side). After spending 25 days at Shorncliffe he was transferred to Monks Horton on Feb 1, 1916 where his wound was look over further. The shrapnel wound to the groin was then changed and diagnosed as a gun shot wound to the pelvis. After spending two days in the hospital at Monks Horton he was discharged. Later on February 15, 1917 he was admitted to Davenport Military with a fractured Metatarsal. He spent 16 days in the hospital and was discharged on March 3, 1917. (Archives)
