Plymouth School - "2005 Year of the Veteran Collage"

The students of Plymouth School's Grades 5/6 French Immersion in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and their teacher, Yolande Donaldson, took the time to study Canadian military events of importance to Veterans. The students studied 26 events in total. Included in the list were the Boer War 1899, the First and Second World Wars, peacekeeping missions, the Merchant Navy, the Poppy, The Royal Canadian Legion and the War in Iraq. Canadian events included the 1867 Dominion of Canada, the adoption of the Canadian flag, the RCMP and the Halifax Explosion.

The students researched these events and gathered a brief description including photos relating to each event. The local Veterans were then invited to the school to share their stories about where they were during the wars or conflicts, on the front lines or on the homefront. The Veterans also brought some pictures of themselves during these years.

The students then placed all the pictures, dates and a brief description of the events in a collage measuring 284cm by 168cm. The collage is a time-line beginning with the Dominion of Canada in 1867 and ending with the War in Iraq and the Year of the Veteran 2005. There is a ray that crosses diagonally through the collage and includes Veterans beginning with pictures of them when they enlisted, during wartime or during peacekeeping missions and ending with pictures of the students and Veterans interacting in 2005. At the end of the ray is a handmade logo of the Year of the Veteran which was made by the students.
