King George V visited Mr. Chapman and his comrades at the front in France. Transcript »

Wilfred Chapman

Wilfred Chapman was born on April 25, 1898 in Peterborough, England. He came to Canada when he was about 14 years old. He moved to Toronto to live with his brother who had preceded him to this country. He enlisted in the Canadian Army when he was about 16 years old. On his arrival in England, he was assigned to a field engineers company. Mr. Chapman died in Peterborough, Ontario on October 29, 1997.

Interviewer: You saw or you met or saw the King. Did he come to visit?

Yes, yes they, he came and we missed him or we thought we had. He was in the Royal standard in the front of the, on the bonnet of his car, ya know. (Yes.) And we were having lunch and they said he's gone the other way. He says, "You might as well break up". So we had a lunch kitchen with us to have hot tea. It was a thing on wheels that made hot water and tea and we got up on this high bank and we were having our lunch and we some of us had these sheep skin coats. (Yeah.) They were white you know, sheep skin. I didn't, I didn't like the damn looks of the things. I had just the ordinary tunic. And all of a sudden, here he is and we went, we were up on the bank. And sure enough he was in this with the Royal standard and the...

Interviewer: What king was this?

King George (George V.) George V, yah.

Interviewer: Did he stop? He had a beard. He wasn't the son. He had a beard and sparkling blue eyes. I remember that, and he looked scared. But they slowed down and he (He waved) recovered himself. But I remember about him his bright blue eyes. (Yeah) And he had a beard.
