Vol.1, No.1
Issue #1, Autumn 2001

UNDERSTANDING PTSD

Over the years, the stress of military service has been identified under many different names, including shell shock, war neurosis, and battle fatigue. Today, this condition is usually referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. To help veterans and still-serving CF clients who may be suffering from PTSD, VAC has published a booklet that describes common symptoms of the disorder and offers practical advice on how to cope with this condition. As well, treatment options are discussed. Partners and families of PTSD sufferers also will find this booklet helpful as it contains information on how to support, and respond to, a loved one affected by PTSD.

Copies of the booklet are available through VAC's District Offices. Please visit our Web site for more information on other initiatives that are in place to help PTSD sufferers and their families.
