CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS

The United Nations has declared 2001 the International Year of Volunteers. Over the years, Veterans Affairs Canada has benefited from the selfless work of thousands of dedicated volunteeers. Here's one lady we Salute!

WHEN I'M 94

They say that women don't like to reveal their age, but this is certainly not the case for Cécile Hubler who volunteers as a receptionist at the Liaison Day Centre at Ste. Anne's Hospital. She is 94 and proud of it. For her, age is only a number and no challenge is too great regardless of her years. 'You have to work to be healthy,' she says. 'When you work, you forget your aches and pains.'

Forced to retire when she was 65, Cécile, with some other women, founded the local chapter of Meals on Wheels, an organization that provides hot meals to the elderly and sick who are homebound. In 1973, she became the Day Centre's first volunteer.

Cécile has no need to ask: 'Will you still need me when I'm 94?' The resounding answer to that from everyone Cécile encounters is 'Yes!' Thank you, Cécile.
