Veterans Affairs Canada: Proudly Serving Canada's Veteran Community

Vol.1, No.1
Issue #1, Autumn 2001

YOUR GUIDE TO VETERANS AFFAIRS CANADA

Veterans Affairs Canada exists to repay Canada's debt of gratitude to the men and women who have served our nation in times of war and, more recently, to maintain global peace. Many of these special Canadians have suffered economic hardship, forfeited their health or even sacrificed their lives.

OUR FAMILY TREE

Veterans Affairs Canada is part of Canada's Veterans Affairs 'Portfolio'. We provide eligible clients with:
  • disability pension programs and veterans allowances to help compensate for hardships arising from disabilities and lost economic opportunities;
  • health benefits and social services, based on need;
  • counselling and assessment;
  • professional legal assistance through the Bureau of Pension Advocates to request, review and appeal decisions made by the Veterans Review and Appeal Board; and
  • commemorative recognition of the achievements and sacrifices of Canadians during periods of war and conflict.

Many people know us by our legal name, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or DVA.

The Veterans Review and Appeal Board, which is also part of the Portfolio, is a quasi-judicial agency, completely independent from the Department, that provides clients with the opportunity to request hearings associated with the review or appeal of disability pension and War Veterans Allowance claims.
