Allied Veterans
Changes to our health regulations mean that Veterans Affairs Canada now offers long-term care to Allied veterans who:
- have lived in Canada for 10 or more years after either of the world wars in which they served. (It doesn't have to be 10 years in a row; rather, the time in Canada must add up to 10 or more years);
- need long-term care; and
- are being admitted to a long-term care facility for the first time on or after
November 6, 2003.
In special cases, Allied veterans who are already in a community facility may be
able to access long-term care at a facility under contract with us or at Ste. Anne's
Hospital if they:
- need end-of-life care, or
- suffer from dementia or other medical conditions and the level of care required cannot be adequately provided in a community facility.
If you are an Allied veteran who is admitted to a priority access bed in a long-term care facility, you also will qualify for health treatment benefits, such as medicine, that you cannot get through a provincial program. Please call us at 1-866-522-2122 if you need more information or help filling out your application. Please Note: If you served in a Resistance Group, you are not considered to be an Allied veteran under this regulation.
