Medium Disabled Veterans

At Veterans Affairs Canada, we're always willing to listen and learn from our clients. Here, Deputy Minister Jack Stagg gives his full attention to Mrs. Blanche Bennett, a recent recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. If you are a qualified war service veteran or civilian who has pensioned disabilities that are assessed as "medium" (48% to 77%), you may now qualify for VAC's health care benefits, VIP and long-term care, provided:

  • you need the benefits and services; and
  • you cannot get the services and benefits through a provincial program.

To qualify for these benefits, your health need does not have to be linked to your pensioned condition. However, there are two important things you should now:

  • You will need to pay for your accommodation and meals if you are admitted to a long-term care facility and it is not related to your pensioned condition.
  • You must live in Canada to access home care services under VIP.
