Dr. Bernard Groulx, B.A., C.M., M.D., C.S.P.Q., F.R.C.P.(c)

Dr. Bernard Groulx has been at Ste. Anne's Hospital for over twenty years, where he has specialized in the field of dementia and the elderly. He is currently the Chief Psychiatrist at Ste. Anne's Hospital and a professor of geriatric psychiatry at McGill University.

Dr. Groulx did his basic training in psychiatry mostly at McGill University. He sought additional training, however, in neurology and geriatric psychiatry, at the University of Miami and at the Massachussetts General Hospital and Harvard University.

Dr. Groulx was behind the launch of the dementia program at Ste. Anne's Hospital - a program held up in example by other long-term care facilities and for which the Hospital was granted an outstanding mention for "good practices" by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, in the winter of 2003. Dr. Groulx collaborated on a dementia-related training session and developed a psychiatric training course given to Hospital employees.

In his extra-clinical activities, Dr. Bernard Groulx was on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, Secretary-General of the Quebec Psychiatric Association and a Member of the Board of Administration of the Quebec Geriatric Association. He was also President of the Quebec Psychogeriatric Society, from 1987 to 1989, and from 1994 to 1998.

He has published 35 scientific articles, chapters in academic books, etc., on psychogeriatric issues. His articles have been published in journals such as the Canadian Alzheimer Disease Review, a magazine on which he has been a member of the editorial committee since its inception. He has been invited to give more than 600 conferences, many in international congress, on the subject of his psychogeriatric expertise. Twenty of them were given in various European universities, eleven in various Japanese universities, over fifty in the United States and the rest in Canada.

In 1994 Dr. Groulx was awarded the Governor General Commemorative Medal of the Confederation of Canada in recognition of his significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. In 1997 he received the Excellency Award, from Veterans Affairs Canada, for his expertise and his work with elderly Veterans.

In 2003 he received the Wenonah Foster Award for his contribution of considerable benefit to Canadian Society, by showing commitment to the philosophies of caring and compassion. In 2004, he published his first book, especially for families and caregivers, entitled "La maladie d'Alzheimer : de la tĂȘte au coeur."
