Interlibrary and Inter-institutional Loans

It is possible to consult many published documents and many microfilm copies of archival documents from Library and Archives Canada's (LAC)collection through the interlibrary or inter-institutional loan service.

How to borrow documents:

  • Contact your local library or archives. They will make the request on your behalf.
  • For published materials, provide details such as author, title, date and publisher of the item you need.
  • For archival microfilm, provide the microfilm reel number and a brief description of what is on the reel you need.
  • It may be helpful to provide a printout or copy of the source where you found out about the item you need.
  • For help finding microfilm reel numbers, use Research Tools or ask us a question.

For family history research, microfilm reel numbers are listed under relevant Sources by Topic on our Canadian Genealogy Centre pages.
