This is the story of 17-year-old Karim and his experiences in the
civil war of his native Lebanon and his subsequent emigration to
Quebec. Karim sees death strike people he is close to,
especially Nada and Maha, as a result of the war. At first he
feels responsible for their deaths but comes to terms with his
feelings after a stay in hospital. The story deals with the
issues of love, family, war, exile and ultimately hope in a
sensitive and realistic way. A beautiful book on the folly of
war.

What happens when you manage the impossible feat of proving that
hens have teeth? Incredible adventures, in this case. The
author uses humour and sensitivity to tell a story that has
elements of both medieval tales of chivalry and modern fantasy.
Renaud sits up in bed. The hen has escaped from her big box by
chewing a hole the size of her body through it. In her wandering
about the house, she bites through the toaster cord and causes a
short circuit. Worse yet, the precious hen has received an
electrical shock. Now how can Renaud prove that hens have teeth,
with a chicken that has been electrocuted and is as black as a
burnt turkey?
