POC 6 - Medical Services

Program Description

In the case of a VAC disability pensioner, this program offers medical services provided by a licensed physician. The costs of medical examinations, treatment, or reports specifically requested by VAC are also covered by this program.

For most VAC clients, physicians' services are the responsibility of the provincial health care programs and not normally paid under this program.

A complete list of available services is located on the POC 6 Benefit Grid.

Who is Eligible?

Two groups of clients are eligible for health care benefits through VAC.

Group "A" clients: You must have established eligibility for a pension from Veterans Affairs Canada. You may only use your card to obtain approved benefits directly related to your pensioned condition. Your provider must obtain authorization from VAC before benefits can be provided.

Group "B" clients: You must have established eligibility for treatment of non-pensioned conditions. You are eligible for approved benefits provided you have a clearly demonstrated health need and these benefits are not covered by your provincial health plan. If you are a "B" client, your provider must bill the appropriate provincial health program for the portion of the benefit that is covered by your province.

To be eligible for benefits under POC 6, you must have an "A" or a "B" under POC 6 on your VAC Health Care Identification Card. Your access to benefits will depend on your eligibility and on your health care needs.

Program Details

Services that may be covered include injections and some in-office procedures not covered by your provincial program. Alternative treatments to those provided by a provincial program are not normally covered unless there is a medical reason that the standard procedure is not appropriate. Benefits available through Program of Choice 6 may be subject to certain limitations or restrictions. These are in place to help safeguard your health and to serve you better.
