POC 13 - Special Equipment

Program Description

This program provides special equipment required for the care and treatment of disabled VAC clients. These benefits must be prescribed by your doctor, and in many cases, they must also be supported by the recommendation of another health professional. The majority of benefits in this program require that authorization be obtained from VAC before the benefit can be provided. Contact your VAC District Office to obtain more information about this program.

Examples of covered benefits:

  • hospital beds
  • lifts
  • home adaptations
  • wheelchairs
  • driving aids

Examples of exluded benefits:

  • mattresses for a regular bed
  • "Craftmatic=type" adjustable beds

A complete list of benefits is located on the POC 13 Benefit Grid.

Who is Eligible?

Two groups of clients are eligible for health care benefits through VAC.

Group "A" clients: You must have established eligibility for a pension from Veterans Affairs Canada. You may only use your card to obtain approved benefits directly related to your pensioned condition. Your provider must obtain authorization from VAC before benefits can be provided.

Group "B" clients: You must have established eligibility for treatment of non-pensioned conditions. You are eligible for approved benefits provided you have a clearly demonstrated health need and these benefits are not covered by your provincial health plan. If you are a "B" client, your provider must bill the appropriate provincial health program for the portion of the benefit that is covered by your province.

To be eligible for benefits under POC 13, you must have an "A" or a "B" under POC 13 on your VAC Health Care Identification Card. Your access to benefits will depend on your eligibility and on your health care needs.
