Bringing turkeys from the United States to Canada

The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency reminds people that they can bring one fresh or frozen turkey from the United States duty free. Any extra turkeys are subject to very high duties and taxes that will more than double the cost of turkeys. Additional turkeys cannot be claimed under a returning resident personal exemption.

In Canada, some agricultural goods such as turkeys are subject to import restrictions to protect domestic markets. People who do not want to pay for extra turkeys can either return them to the U.S. or abandon them at the border.

Since it is not possible to ensure that turkeys abandoned at the border are safe to eat, these turkeys will have to be destroyed so that the health and safety of Canadians is not compromised.

For more information, travellers can call any regional customs office. Numbers are listed under "Revenue Canada" (now the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency) in the Government of Canada section of telephone books.
