Roch Carrier, National Librarian of Canada, Receives Generous Gift from Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada

Ottawa, July 20, 2000  --  On behalf of the National Library of Canada, National Librarian Roch Carrier today accepted a gift of The Complete Works of Lokuang from the Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada.

This 42-volume set is a collection of the lifelong publications of Archbishop Stanislaus Lokuang, former president (1978-1992) of the Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. It is regarded as one of the great masterpieces of Chinese literature, covering such topics as philosophy, religion, art, Confucianism, Taoism and Catholic theology.

"As the collection of the National Library of Canada evolves to reflect the cultural diversity of our country, this generous donation will provide all Canadians with a very rich source for the study of Chinese culture and philosophy," said Roch Carrier.

In presenting the gift to Dr. Carrier, Dr. Chin-Yen Fang, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, said, "This book donation marks a significant start for cultural exchange between libraries of Canada and Taiwan."
