CFL Consortium Purchases 462 Electronic Books through NetLibrary

Ottawa, May 1, 2001  --  The Council of Federal Libraries (CFL) Consortium is pleased to announce today that it has purchased 462 electronic books through netLibrary. The e-books will be available to federal employees in 37 departments and agencies across Canada.

"This product reinforces the role of federal libraries in providing information to clients in new and innovative ways, using the latest technology," says Emil Daniel, CFL Consortium Coordinator.

The 462 electronic books in the areas of management, human resources and information technology were chosen by the Consortium to meet the common information needs of workers of all levels in all government departments.

Individual departments, notably the Departments of Agriculture, and Fisheries and Oceans, have added 100 more netLibrary titles in their areas of interests. These will also be shared among departments. This co-operative initiative enhances the book collections in federal libraries and gives employees in departments with smaller or more specialized libraries access to a wider variety of books.

"Delivering e-books to the desktop maximizes the resources of federal libraries to serve our government clients more directly, quickly and efficiently. Access to the same materials in management, HR and IT avoids duplication but, more importantly, allows us to share knowledge on topics of interest to us all," says Roch Carrier, National Librarian of Canada.

NetLibrary (www.netlibrary.com) is a leading provider of copyrighted electronic books. Canadian publishers are well represented in the netLibrary collections. Books may be browsed online, downloaded to an e-reader or "borrowed" for a fixed time period, which is the same as for print titles. NetLibrary e-books are delivered to the desktop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The CFL Consortium (www.collectionscanada.ca/consortium/index-e.html) was established in 1995 to facilitate purchasing and information sharing among its members. The Consortium uses the collective purchasing powers gained through its membership to achieve cost savings for products and services. Currently there are 117 member libraries from 37 different federal government departments and agencies.
