Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialist - Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association

Reports to:   DIRECT: TOTA VP Destination & Industry Development
                                 
TOTA President & CEO

Purpose: Working as part of the TOTA team and in collaboration with Indigenous Tourism British Columbia (ITBC) to assist indigenous communities in the Thompson Okanagan to develop and support export ready indigenous business development and to promote the indigenous products of the region. 

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Represent ITBC and TOTA within the Thompson Okanagan Region as the Indigenous Tourism Specialist
  2. Work towards the continued development and strengthening of key relationships to foster Indigenous tourism.
  3. Promote awareness and connectivity to tourism stakeholders, policy makers and organizations to understand the value of Indigenous culture tourism and subsequently create new market demand for Indigenous tourism experiences.
  4. Promote awareness and connectivity to Indigenous tourism stakeholders, policy makers, leaders and organizations to understand the value of non-Indigenous tourism and subsequently create new market demand for collaborative tourism experiences.
  5. Update and implement the Thompson Okanagan Regional Tourism Strategy, and as directed, the Indigenous Tourism 5 year plan Pulling Together and ITBC Annual Tourism Action Plan ensuring alignment with national, provincial, and regional strategic plans.
  6. Implement on the priority projects as outlined in the Regional Destination Development Strategies.
  7. Assist TOTA and ITBC in the acquisition of Indigenous tourism content for marketing and social media activities.
  8. Support the development of Statement of Cooperation agreements as first step to building prosperous and respectful relationships that supports the development of Indigenous authentic experiences and products.
  9. Provide assistance to Thompson Okanagan Indigenous stakeholders to become market-ready through accessing various Training and Product Development programs.
  10. Connect the existing market-ready and export-ready Indigenous businesses within the Thompson Okanagan region to TOTA and ITBC teams to develop and grow the tourism destination.
  11. Oversee and assume the role as project management lead of the IArT Artisan pilot project on behalf of TOTA.
  12. Represent TOTA and ITBC at Chief and Council meetings and Community events, celebrations and information workshops at the Community level.
  13. Participate as a Program Advisor in the Tourism Resiliency and Recovery Initiative and other projects as assigned.

Relationships & Supervision

Represents the standards and work ethic established by TOTA and communicates directly with immediate supervisor for direction, methodology and reporting as part of a team.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Thompson Okanagan region and it’s tourism experiences
  • Previous experience community liaison
  • Previous Retail experience
  • Background and knowledge of POS systems
  • Strong leadership and customer management abilities
  • Proficient in using the Google and Microsoft Office Suites
  • Highly organized and motivated

Strengthening Homefire Cultural Support Worker (SHCSW)

Yearly Salary: $32,760.00 to $43,680.00
Based upon experience and Indigenous knowledge
Seeking a 2 full-time Cultural Support Worker for one for Leduc area and one for Fort Saskatchewan area

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practice for our families, community, and staff.
• Assist in creating and maintaining an environment of safety and wellness in the programming areas.
• Work with children and families to provide cultural teachings and assist in the development and implementation of cultural components to the programs using tools such as Traditional Parenting.
• Provides supportive and trusting relationships with the Family members
• Engages in collaborative community partnerships to promote traditional healing, cultural teachings and practice.
• Participate in team meetings, agency meetings and training deemed necessary
• Maintain an appropriate record and information system.
• Ensure that accurate program and client records are maintained, and that confidentiality is a priority.
• Ensure that all relevant documentation is complete (contact notes, pre-post evaluation, exit interviews be completed by team-lead)
• Adheres to Creating Hope Society policies and standards personnel policy.
• To maintain a healthy and safe environment.
• Help build a model of cultural safety for grieving, the ceremonial healing process, and to reintroduce the traditional ways of knowing and doing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Social Work Diploma, or Human Services Diploma or Aboriginal studies with lived experience
• Teachings and experience in traditional language, knowledge, healing practices and wisdom
• Experience working with children, youth and families.
• Demonstrates practical and historical knowledge of intergeneration trauma, stress and cultural repression
• Promotes cultural values and increases awareness about cultural traditions and spirituality.
Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task in a dynamic working environment; self-motivated personality; ability to work independently and as a team player
• Mentors, encourages and participates in cultural, recreational, and social programs that offer positive and healthier alternatives to balanced lifestyles
• Demonstrates an ability to maintain composure and performance while under stress or pressure.
• Manages personal stress by utilizing various appropriate coping skills.
• Must have knowledge in Microsoft Office and Excel
• Must have reliable transportation and current valid Alberta Driver’s License and 2 million insurance and liability coverage
• Driver’s Abstract required
• CRIM check required
• Child Welfare Intervention check required
