Social Responsibility

Since 1992, the Yukon Liquor Corporation has become increasingly more proactive in the area of social responsibility awareness education. One of our priority objectives is to encourage social responsibility in the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Yukon. From the introduction of FAS/FAE warning labels in 1992 and a radio campaign highlighting the dangers of drinking while pregnant, we have expanded to billboards, posters, coasters and a host of other audio and visual media to depict a variety of messages aimed at reminding people to drink responsibly.

Distribution of materials is done territory-wide through licensed outlets, community health centres, R.C.M.P. detachments, liquor stores, Territorial Agents, recreational dealerships and various NGO organizations.

Some of the target initiatives are:

  DON’T DRINK ‘TIL YOU’RE DONE

The misuse of alcohol when operating off-road vehicles is a concern in all areas of the country.

In February 2003, the Canadian Institute for Health Information reported that injuries from ATV-related activities were the third most common cause of severe injuries next to cycling and snowmobiling.

We want to remind people to operate their off-road vehicles responsibly. Wait until after you’ve finished your activity for the day if you plan to consume alcohol.

Be Prepared to talk to your children About Drinking

The Yukon Liquor Corp. offers a tool (click on image) to help parents discuss drinking and drinking-related issues with their children. This 32 page full-colour guide has been very well-received in other jurisdictions and was adapted from a publication of a Québec non-government organization, Éduc’Alcool. This publication is particularly helpful for parents, grandparents and care-givers of children between eight and 18 years old.

Plan Ahead to Stay Safe

Since 1995, the Yukon Liquor Corporation has provided funding for high school graduating classes throughout the Yukon to promote and support alcohol-free activities.

This campaign is supported by a "Party Tips" brochure suggesting ideas for both parents and students to help ensure students get home safe from parties and other graduation festivities.
