Professional School Personnel Certification in Manitoba

A valid Manitoba certificate must be held in order to be employed as professional school personnel in Manitoba.

Professional school personnel include the classroom teacher, clinician, vocational teacher, special education teacher and coordinator, level 1 and level 2 administrators.

Classroom Teacher - All applicants for a Manitoba teaching certificate are required to complete the application process. Applications cannot be completed on line but must be printed and sent in to the Professional Certification Unit with the requested information.

Applicants certified in another province or country
Graduates of a Manitoba Bachelor of Education program

Read all the instructions provided. Ensure all areas of the application are completed and the requested documents are included or have been arranged to be submitted before sending the application to the Professional Certification Unit.

 

School Clinicians - School Clinicians certified in Manitoba for the first time are issued provisional certificates, valid for two years. A certificate may be extended upon the recommendation of a school superintendent.

Six types of school clinician certificates exist in Manitoba:
Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Psychologist, Reading, Speech & Hearing, and Social Worker.

The application for a school clinician cannot be filled in on line but must be printed off and mailed in with the appropriate documentation for evaluation. Please read all the instructions provided in the application package (Adobe Icon 139 KB).

 

Level 1 or 2 Administrator - There are two types of certificates:

Level 1 School Administrator's Certificate
Level 2 Principal's Certificate

Manitoba Regulation 515/88 of The Education Administration Act recognizes two levels of certificates. Currently, these certificates are not required in order to accept an administrative position; however, school divisions are encouraged to select those who have or who may qualify for the above certificates.

Special Education Teacher -To receive a Special Education Teacher Certificate, a valid Manitoba Professional Teaching certificate is required along with a minimum of two years of successful teaching experience while holding a valid Manitoba teaching certificate.

Special Education Coordinator -A Special Education Coordinator certificate may be given when the candidate:

Holds a valid Manitoba Special Education Teacher's Certificate and completes five (5) years of approved experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • Regular classroom teaching,
  • Resource or special class teaching, or both,
  • Approved clinical or special agency work at a professional level such as psychology, reading, social work, speech and hearing, and school counselling,
  • Consultative or supervisory experience such as school administrator or department head.

To receive a Special Education Coordinator's certificate, a request in writing, must be submitted to the Professional Certification Unit. Include in the request an official statement from a current and/or former employer(s) that a minimum of five (5) years of experience in at least two of the above areas of responsibility have been completed.
