Strategic Technology-Assisted Professional Learning Environment (STAPLE) is a new initiative that addresses the K-S4 Education Agenda for Student Success, Priority 4; "Develop new formats for professional development such as teacher networks, on-line learning, mentoring or self-study.

The purpose of STAPLE is to expand the range of professional learning environments for Manitoba educators by researching, developing, and implementing integrated technology-assisted professional learning models.

In order to work towards success for all learners, schools need professional learning that reflects best practices and is supported by research. Therefore, the STAPLE project will respond to the need to

  • increase flexibility in accessing professional learning opportunities (geographical location, time, cost saving)
  • foster reflection
  • improve mentoring and collaboration
  • offer ongoing support, follow-up and application
  • support implementation of curriculum on a timely basis

Expected Results

Phase 1: Action Research

  • Report on literature and field focus groups
  • Create prototype model
  • Report on field test and analysis of trial data

Phase 2: Development

  • Create guidelines and strategies for implementation of a professional learning model
  • Develop an adaptable professional learning model
  • Produce a framework for the use of technology-assisted professional learning

Phase 3: Implementation

  • Expanded range of professional learning environments for Manitoba Educators
