Solar Power

Solar photovoltaic systems and hybrid systems using solar and some other power source (such as a wind turbine), have long been considered a green power option for supplying electricity in remote locations. The Yukon Energy Portable Solar-Hybrid is providing a mechanism to test this technology under local conditions. It is also being used to help familiarize Yukoners with solar power and its potential uses in the Yukon.

This Solar-Hybrid Unit was developed by Yukon Energy as a demonstration project. It is sized for small-scale residential use, providing enough power to run common household items, well pumps and power tools, but not heat loads (electric dryer, electric hot-water heater, electric cook stove, etc.).

Once transported to a site and set up on a south facing, shade free, level area, the final wiring requirements are grounding the system to a ground rod and cabling the inverter output to the AC mains distribution. Its maintenance involves an occasional cleaning of the solar modules and keeping proper water levels in the batteries. An additional charging source will be required during the winter months and after periods of high-energy usage.

Since the unit was completed 1999, Yukon Energy has used the Solar-Hybrid Unit at a number of local events including the Dawson Gold Show, the Commissioner's Potlatch and the Yukon Agricultural Fair. The Corporation intends to continue this practice as a means to both promote and test the technology under local circumstances.
