The Commission Concludes its Review into the RCMP's Treatment of Mr. Maher Arar

Ottawa - September 27, 2006  - The Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, Mr. Paul E. Kennedy, announced today that he is concluding the Commission's review  into the treatment of Mr. Maher Arar. Mr. Kennedy is ".satisfied that his concerns about the RCMP's treatment of Mr. Maher Arar have been thoroughly addressed by Justice Dennis O'Connor in his report."  Further investigation of the concerns raised in the Commission's complaint is no longer required.

In his report, Justice O'Connor made a number of remedial recommendations about how the RCMP can improve the discharge of its duties in respect of national security investigations.  The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, to the extent that its mandate permits, will monitor the RCMP's implementation of Justice O'Connor's recommendations.
