XVI International AIDS Conference

XVI International AIDS Conference - August 13-18, 2006

This summer, Canada will welcome the world to Toronto for the world's largest International AIDS Conference. AIDS 2006 will bring together more than 20,000 of the world's scientists, health care providers, educators, policy makers, AIDS Service Organizations, community leaders and people living with HIV/AIDS to share current knowledge on a full spectrum of issues about the global pandemic.

The theme of AIDS 2006, Time to Deliver, underscores the continued urgency in bringing effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies to communities the world over. The Conference is structured into three streams -Science, Community, and Leadership- which reflect key components of the global HIV/AIDS response. In addition to these streams, there are number of activities, including the Global Village, Youth Programme and the Cultural Programme, that are integral to the delegates' experience at the Conference.

The Government of Canada (GOC) is committed to doing its part to ensure the success of AIDS 2006. Through the Federal AIDS 2006 Secretariat, the GOC has been coordinating its engagement in the Conference. This group, comprised of representatives from close to 15 departments and agencies, meets regularly to manage various policy, operational, and communications issues related to the Conference.

An important part of the GOC's presence at the Conference will be the Canadian Exhibition Space. This exhibit will visually depict the relationship between the Canadian actors at the Conference who share responsibility for combating HIV/AIDS in Canada: the Government of Canada, Provinces/Territories, Canadian non-governmental organizations, and the City of Toronto.

The Government of Canada has provided significant financial support to the overall Conference program and the Canadian and international scholarship programs.

The GOC's engagement in the Conference is also demonstrated through the active involvement of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of International Cooperation, and the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health.
