Sub-series Part of:
Rev. George Hallen

Date(s):
[181-]-1881

Extent
    0.13 m of textual records.

Scope and content
Sub-series consists of diaries and notebooks kept by Rev. George Hallen to record his thoughts and observations, as well as texts copied for his own reference.

Hallen's earliest surviving diary contains sporadic entries from 1821 onwards which document his life in England. The bulk of the diaries comprise volumes dating from 1835 to 1848, in which he records his experiences of leaving England, making the trans-Atlantic crossing with his family, sojourning in New York state, and settling in Upper Canada/ Canada West. Entries convey his impressions of life aboard ship, American and Canadian society, living conditions in a sparsely settled area of Upper Canada, opinions on church and religion, encounters with Aboriginal Canadians, family tragedies, and political events such as the Upper Canada Rebellion.

Many of the notebooks are commonplace books filled with Hallen's jottings on a wide variety of topics ranging from Native languages to weather data and agricultural practices. Some of the notebooks are of a hybrid variety, containing both diary entries and miscellaneous information. Notable volumes include a booklet containing recipes (mostly medicinal) and a notebook in which he recorded the growth and development of his four eldest children.

Hallen also copied texts for reference purposes. These include notes on English history, church history, and philosophy.
