Section Title: Permanent Resident Card

Information Regarding Urgent Cases

If you plan to travel internationally by commercial carrier and do not think you will be able to obtain a PR Card prior to your departure we may be able to assist you by processing your application on an urgent basis.

Consult Application Processing Times to find out how long it is currently taking to process a PR Card application.

Please note that Canadian citizens do not need the PR card to travel.

1. If you have not yet mailed your application

Please complete your application as instructed, include a copy of your plane tickets with your application, and write “Urgent—Proof of travel included” on your envelope. An agent from the processing centre will examine your application on a priority basis.

2. If you mailed your application before the processing times posted on our Web site and have not yet received your card

Please send us the following information by fax at (514) 496-8670:

  • surname and given name;
  • client ID number (if available);
  • date of birth;
  • home address:
  • telephone number;
  • e-mail address (if applicable);
  • a copy of your plane ticket; and
  • a copy of the pages of your passport showing your name, date of birth and photograph.

If all these requirements are met, we will examine your request and contact you within two business days to inform you whether it is possible to expedite the issuance of your PR card.

3. If you mailed your application after the processing time posted on our Web site

You can check to see if the processing of your application has begun through the e-Client Application Status (e-CAS) service. If the processing has begun, please fax the information requested in number 2 above. Unfortunately, if processing has not begun, we will be unable to expedite your application as it is still in our inventory of unopened mail. You may wish to submit an application for a temporary travel document (see below).

4. Temporary Travel Document

If it is not possible to issue a PR card to you before you travel, you may submit an application for a temporary travel document by mail to a Canadian visa office in the location that you will visit. You may also submit an application in person at any Canadian visa office around the world*, including the United States. Same-day service is provided in urgent cases except where an individual indicates that immediate processing is not required. Applicants will normally be required to pick up the travel document in person at the visa office. Applications for a temporary travel document are available at Canadian visa offices or on-line.

______

*Please note that not all Canadian embassies, high commissions and consulates issue temporary travel documents. Please be sure to send your application for a temporary travel document to the appropriate Canadian visa office.
