The Unit is made up of the Chief Occupational Medical Officer (COMO) and
an epidemiology component. The COMO has general responsibilities and
authority as outlined in the Act, to monitor and intervene in issues of
worker safety and health, especially on issues of occupational illness. The
responsibility of the Unit is the provision of consultation respecting
occupational health concerns. The Unit is both proactive and reactive in its
support to Division staff, health colleagues, industry and business
managers, workers, and others requesting assistance, as follows:
- Responsible for health surveillance programs consistent with
professional standards and ethics, as well as departmental policy;
- Provides consultation regarding occupational health concerns to
workers, employers, health care professionals and agencies;
- Appraises and advises on new developments and issues in occupational
health;
- Develops recommendations regarding occupational health issues
consistent with the goals of the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
