This section is for Adult EAL teachers and prospective teachers.
Teaching Adult EAL is a challenging endeavour requiring substantial professional expertise to meet Manitoba's goals.
2006 Fall Newsletter
The Fall Newsletter has important information for Adult EAL teachers in Manitoba to help them understand and meet the needs of the changing demographics in classrooms.
Goals
The goals of Adult EAL instruction in Manitoba are to assist students to:
- develop communicative competence in EAL; and
- acquire necessary, appropriate and timely settlement information to pursue their personal, academic, and employment goals and live lives of dignity and purpose in Canada.
Context
Language and Culture
Language and culture are recognized to be inextricably linked. The goals of Adult
EAL instruction are furthered by providing opportunities for students to learn about Canadian culture. The development of communicative competence is also enhanced when students can examine and share observations about Canadian culture, their own cultures and the cultures of their classmates.
Adult Learners
It is also recognized that Adult EAL students are diverse in their characteristics. They come to the learning environment:
- with a personal sense of purpose and motivation;
- with a variety of educational and language learning experiences;
- in different stages of the settlement process; and
- with a wealth of life experience
which must be reflected in all aspects of the adult language learning experience.
Professionalism
Adult EAL instruction in Manitoba is influenced by our commitment to excellence and professionalism.
Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
The introduction of the CLB working document has been welcomed in Manitoba as a
valuable tool in Adult EAL instruction. It provides educators, administrators and program developers with:
- a common language for discussing the communicative competence of students; and
- a stimulus for reflection on SLA and learning in Adult EAL students.
Programs, therefore, require Adult EAL teachers to have a combination of
professional credentials and experience. Adult EAL teachers committed to ongoing
professional development will find information in this section about workshops and
conferences offered throughout the year. Teachers will also find information and
resources related to Adult EAL curriculum and teaching. Information about the language
levels needed by learners for various post-secondary courses, occupations and tests is
available in the following PDF file:
