Assessing
Employee Language Levels
Employers in Manitoba need
to know that their employees possess the language capabilities required for the
job. In some cases, occupations may
have already been Benchmarked to determine what language levels are needed to
succeed at
that job. For further information
please click on the following link: the
Canadian Language Benchmarks: A Summary of Courses, Programs, Occupations and
Test that have been Benchmarked in Manitoba.
For the vast majority of
jobs it is up to the employer to make a decision as to how much language is
needed and how much language an applicant possesses.
A wrong decision means someone is hired who cannot function safely and
effectively, or someone with excellent work skills is not hired even though he
or she could have succeeded.
The Adult Language Training
Branch can provide support to businesses looking to establish a protocol for
language requirements. This may
include Benchmarking a sample of current staff to establish a baseline, and/or
development of a language assessment testing tool that is tailored to the
business. Linking assessment to
training can be done through the English at Work Program.
