Although most radio stations, television programs and newspapers in Manitoba provide services in English, a few serve other language and community groups.

Radio Stations in Manitoba

Many radio stations supply programming in Manitoba. (See the Yellow Pages, under Radio Stations & Broadcasting Companies.)

CBC (990 AM and 98.3 FM) is Canada's national broadcaster. CKSB (1050 AM) provides services in French and CKJS (810 AM) has services in several languages. All other stations provide programming in English.

Beyond the price of purchasing a radio, there is no additional fee or tax to hear programs on the radio.

Television Channels in Manitoba

There are four television channels that supply free programming in Manitoba: CBC (channel 2), CKY (channel 5), City TV (channel 8) and Global Television (channel 9, cable 12). The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) provides services in both English and French. Additional program channels, such as the Community Access Channel (Channel 11) which provides programming in languages other than English, are available for a fee through cable television companies.

Many people in Manitoba purchase cable for their televisions, so they can watch the many television stations that are now available to the public. Cable television is available in most cities and some towns, but it is not yet available in many rural communities.

Please refer to the Housing section for more information on cable television.

Newspapers in Manitoba

There are two daily newspapers in Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Free Press ((204) 697-7000) and the Winnipeg Sun ((204) 694-2022), and several weekly community newspapers. Daily newspapers are also published in Brandon, Portage La Prairie and Flin Flon. There is one French language newspaper, La Liberté ((204) 237-4823), published weekly in Manitoba, as well as several newspapers available in a variety of languages and for a variety of community groups.

Some newspapers only provide information on specific items such as houses for sale (Winnipeg Real Estate News) and local entertainment (The Uptown Magazine). These newspapers are free of charge at many locations throughout Winnipeg. International newspaper publications are available at some Winnipeg stores. These stores are listed in the Yellow Pages under the heading News Dlrs (dealers).

Free Internet Access

There are many places in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba where you can get free Internet access. The Winnipeg Public Library has free Internet access to library card holders at all of its 20 branches. See http://wpl.winnipeg.ca/library/ for more information on library locations. Outside Winnipeg, contact the library in your area.

Currently, users can only use the library Internet for ˝ hour at a time. To use the Internet for free, go to the library. Tell the librarian that you would like to book (reserve) Internet time on the computer.

To find other places in Winnipeg where you can have free Internet access, see http://www.communityconnections.mb.ca/.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Shaw Cable provides free Public Service Announcements (PSAs) postings on their channel, to assist non-profit organizations in promoting their events, meetings, and activities.

There is a limit on how many of these messages Shaw is able to play. Space is available on a first-come first-served basis. Shaw cannot guarantee exactly when the PSA will go on the air or for how many days it will remain on the air.

Because the volume of requests is very large, it is important that you submit your PSA in a form that Shaw Cable can quickly transfer into on-air text.

  • Please submit your message by fax, e-mail, or regular mail. Please do not submit hand written messages. Shaw Cable accepts video PSAs too. Please send them in on Betacam SP tape format. They should be a maximum of thirty (30) seconds in duration.
  • Please include your phone number, for viewers to call for more information. Shaw Cable cannot take calls from viewers requesting more information on specific events.
  • Shaw Cable reserves to edit your message. They also reserve the right to determine whether the message is appropriate for distribution on their station.

You can send in your request by:

Public Libraries

Most communities in Manitoba either have or have access to public libraries. Libraries offer opportunities to read and do research on nearly any topic you choose. Libraries are supported by taxes. Anyone can use the services of the library.

If you wish to borrow books, video tapes, CDs or other materials, you must apply for a library card. (If you are not a permanent resident of the city, you will have to pay an annual fee for a library card.) You can borrow most items for up to three weeks. If you do not return them on time, you will be charged a daily overdue fine.

Libraries are listed in the grey pages at the back of the telephone directory, under City of Winnipeg Community Services. You can get a list of libraries throughout Manitoba from the Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism. For further information contact:
