The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) handles consumer complaints, consumer education and other consumer services designed to protect the public from unscrupulous business operators.
Under the Consumer Protection Act, there are laws and regulations regarding:
- Lending and borrowing money;
- Chattel mortgages;
- Retail sales;
- Foreclosures; and
- Prepayment privileges and borrowing costs.
The Consumer Protection Act also covers licensing and operating restrictions for direct sellers, vendors and collection agencies.
