Charles Dent was born in Edmonton on July 20, 1951. He was initially elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1991 and was re-elected on October 16, 1995, December 6, 1999, and on November 24, 2003 to the 15th Legislative Assembly. He received his B.A. from the University of Alberta and has been a resident of Yellowknife since 1976. In 1979, Mr. Dent started radio station CJCD, which he managed until his election to the Legislative Assembly in 1991. Mr. Dent was an alderman on Yellowknife City Council in 1984 and 1985 and served as President of the NWT Association of Municipalities. A volunteer firefighter for seven years, he is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Yellowknife. Mr. Dent also worked on the organizing committee for the first Prospects North in 1989. As a Member of the 12th Legislative Assembly, Mr. Dent was Chairman of the Special Committee on Health and Social Services; a member of the Standing Committee on Finance; the Standing Committee on Agencies, Boards and Commissions; an alternate member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and was a member of the management group of the Constitutional Development Steering Committee. In the 13th Legislative Assembly, Mr. Dent was a member of Cabinet, serving as Minister of Education, Culture and Employment; Minister Responsible for NWT Power Corporation; Minister Responsible for Youth; Minister Responsible for Western Transition and Minister Responsible for Millennium Celebrations (West). He was Minister of Finance from April through January 2000. As a Member of the 14th Assembly, Mr. Dent was Chairman of the Accountability and Oversight Committee; a member of the Standing Committee on Social Programs; and a member of the Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures. A Member of Cabinet in the 15th Assembly, Mr. Dent is currently Government House Leader, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and Minister Responsible for Official Languages.
