Sandy Lee was elected to the 14 th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories as the Member for Range Lake on December 6, 1999, and was re-elected to the 15th Legislative Assembly on November 24, 2003. In both Assemblies, Ms. Lee is one of two women elected.

A long-time Northerner, Ms. Lee has made Yellowknife her home since 1978. She is a proud product of the local education system, having graduated from William McDonald Junior High School and Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife, where she was awarded the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and the Mace Coffey Service Award for her service and leadership within the student community.

Ms. Lee went on to further her education, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with High Honours from Carleton University in Ottawa and a law degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. She also studied two years of the Business Administration Program, majoring in Consumer Marketing at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.

Before commencing her career as a lawyer in Yellowknife, Ms. Lee worked for the Government of the Northwest Territories in various capacities. She served as a research officer for the Members of the Legislative Assembly and as an Executive Assistant to Cabinet Minister’s and the Speaker of the House.

Ms. Lee has been active as a volunteer for a number of community organizations including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the NWT Council for Disabled Persons. She also served as president of the Multicultural Association of the Northwest Territories.

In 2000, Ms. Lee was asked to speak at the Closing Plenary of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was also the only elected representative from Canada to serve as a member of the 2003 Nigerian Presidential Elections Commonwealth Election Observer Team.

She is currently the Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Programs that oversees legislative and financial matters pertaining to the Department of Health and Social Services, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, the Department of Justice and the NWT Housing Corporation.
