Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Act is a proposed new law that would give people a new way to keep their communities safer.

Public safety investigators would investigate complaints about:

  • Drug use, dealing or associated activities
  • Prostitution
  • Bootlegging
  • Use of non-potable intoxicating substances (like Lysol or hairspray)
  • Gaming

If this law was passed, people who were disturbing their neighbours this way could  be evicted from the property. An investigator could also work with the residents of the property to find another way to stop the activities without an eviction order.

This law would only apply to activities that have a negative effect on the community and are ongoing, not those that only happen occasionally.

The Department is consulting with residents to find out if this law would work in the NWT. If you don't find the information you're looking for on this website, please call us.
