Healthy Pregnancies
Healthy babies come from healthy pregnancies. The Department is committed to helping
pregnant women and parents with young children make healthy lifestyle choices and
provide supportive environments for their children to grow and develop. A healthy environment
for pregnancy and early childhood development includes a tobacco-free pregnancy and
alcohol free pregnancy, proper nutrition, exercise, smoke-free homes, injury prevention and
mental well-being.
The Department's Healthy Pregnancies Initiative, done in partnership with other government
departments and agencies, includes the following activities:
-
a territorial Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Integrated Response and a territorial FASD awareness campaign called Keep Families Strong;
-
ongoing work with the territorial FASD Expert Committee and the Canada Northwest FASD Partnership on FASD prevention and public-awareness;
-
a territory-wide Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition Survey to gather information on infant feeding over a one-year period to inform future breastfeeding and infant nutrition programs;
-
working in partnership with the NWT Baby Friendly Initiative Committee on community-based projects that promote, protect and support breastfeeding;
-
collaborating with GNWT and non-government organizations on the Early Childhood Development Framework for Action; and
-
funding for community projects that promote healthy pregnancies through the Health Promotion Strategy Fund.
