Responsible for: 

The jurisdiction of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador includes:

  • Criminal:
    all summary conviction offences under federal and provincial statutes; indictable offences except where excluded under the Criminal Code, e.g., murder, treason, piracy, intimidating Parliament, seditious offences;

  • Civil:
    all civil actions where the amount does not exceed $5000. The Court has no jurisdiction over cases in which title to land is brought into question or for malicious prosecution, false imprisonment and defamation, or against a justice or other public official for anything done while executing the duties of office;

  • Family:
    outside the St. John's area, the Court has jurisdiction over marriage, support, maintenance, child welfare, legitimacy, paternity, adoption and interspousal Criminal Code offences; and

  • Youth:
    the Court hears all criminal matters involving young offenders.
