100th Anniversary of the Frank Slide
On 29 April 2003, on the occasion of the ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Frank Slide, the Honorable Ralph Klein, Premier of Alberta, announced that $1.1 million in funding was to be made available for a program of monitoring on Turtle Mountain.
A state-of-the-art predictive monitoring system was designed and deployed by 31 March 2005. Implementing the project required a collaborative effort between contractors, the Government of Alberta, and universities. Long-term monitoring of the mountain continues.
The Turtle Mountain Monitoring Project was initially administered by the Department of Municipal Affairs, specifically Emergency Management Alberta. It is currently administered by the Alberta Geological Survey (EUB) which also has technical responsibility for the project .
The primary purpose of the system mandated by the Premier is to provide possible early warning of any future rock fall hazard from Turtle Mountain to help mitigate risk to the public. Besides enhancing public safety it is also anticipated that there will be ample opportunity for significant scientific research and benefits to public education and tourism through accompanying displays at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.
