E-PASS Pilot Project

An E-PASS is a workplace transit pass.  The TRAX Project of the Ecology Action Centre and Metro Transit are launching an E-PASS Pilot Project in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).  The Pilot Project started at the Department of Energy in October 2006.  Based on the success of the Pilot Project, the E-PASS may be rolled out to more workplaces in 2007.

Benefits

E-PASS programs offer numerous benefits to a range of stakeholders:

~

Improves Employee Morale.

Transit subsidies are a cost-effective employee benefit.  They cost less than other benefits, but employees use them more frequently and so place a high value on them.

~

Recruits and Retains Employees.

Hiring and training new staff is estimated to cost 50% to 150% of that position's annual salary; a transit subsidy that helps retain one or two employees per year will pay for itself.

~

Reduces Parking Demand and Costs.

Fewer parking spaces means decreased costs for snow plowing and salting, repaving, enforcement, and leasing.

~

Builds Green Image.

Promoting transit use demonstrates civic and environmental leadership by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and traffic congestion.
