PROFILE
The Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP) represents approximately 140 Canadian-owned and controlled book publishers from across the country. The membership is diverse and includes publishers from a variety of genres.
Over 80% of Canadian-authored titles are published by the Canadian-owned sector. This means a strong Canadian-owned sector is vital to the development of new Canadian authors and writers.
MANDATE
The ACP assists Canadian-owned publishers in promoting the excellence of Canadian books, in bringing more Canadian books to more readers in Canada, and in expanding Canadian-owned publishers' domestic and international market share.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Through its research, marketing, professional development initiatives, government and public relations, the ACP helps its Member publishers to create an economically sustainable Canadian-owned and controlled publishing industry. To accomplish this goal, the ACP focuses its resources on three distinct areas:
Communications and Marketing
The ACP, on behalf of its Members, acts as the main interlocutor and policy interface between the many publishing industry players. The ACP website provides a list of its members, news and announcements, and information on how to get published and distributed. The events calendar and news pages give up-to-date information on activities in the publishing industry and are a useful tool to promote the successes of our publishers. ACP also disseminates timely and relevant information to the membership on a bi-weekly basis through its ACP Update email newsletter.
Government and Public Relations
The ACP provides public policy advice, feedback and representation to both levels of government, cultural and arts agencies, the media and the public. Member publishers have the opportunity to shape their policy climate though their participation in ACP meetings, committees, and lobbying efforts.
Research and Professional Development
The ACP conducts industry-specific research and professional development seminars that assist its Members to strengthen their ability to sell Canadian-authored titles. The ACP is member driven, flexible and responsive to publishers' needs. It structures its research and seminars to suit members' business requirements. The ACP manages six special-interest committees: Supply Chain and BookNet Canada Committee; Children's Publishers Committee; Canada Council Committee; Education Committee; Copyright Committee and the Export Committee. Please see the ACP Committees page for more information.
