Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Announces
Final Limits on Election Expenses for Candidates and Political Parties

OTTAWA, Tuesday, January 17, 2006 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, announced today the final election expenses limits for candidates and political parties. The final limit is based on the number of names on the preliminary or revised lists of electors, whichever yields the higher expenses limit.

Pursuant to subsection 422(1) of the Canada Elections Act, the maximum amount that is allowed for election expenses of a registered political party for an election is the product of $0.70 multiplied by the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors or by the number of names on the revised lists of electors, whichever is greater, for electoral districts for which a registered political party has a confirmed candidate. This amount is then adjusted for inflation.

The final expenses limits for the political parties for the 39th general election are as follows:

Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada $68,154.97
Bloc Québécois $4,676,676.52
