Elections Canada Releases Spending Limits for Candidates

OTTAWA, Friday, October 27, 2006 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean‑Pierre Kingsley, today released the limits on election expenses for candidates in the by‑elections of Monday, November 27, 2006, in the electoral districts of Repentigny (Quebec) and London North Centre (Ontario).

These limits are based on the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors, and calculated using a formula set out in the Canada Elections Act, which makes adjustments for sparsely populated ridings and those with lower-than-average populations.

Limits on election expenses for candidates in each riding

Electoral District Number Electoral District Limit
24053 Repentigny $85,165.30
35043 London North Centre $88,119.87

The Act allows adjustments to these limits based on the revised lists of electors. The final election expenses limits for candidates will be released on or before Monday, November 20, 2006.

By-elections will be held in Repentigny and London North Centre on Monday, November 27, 2006.
