Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Receives Notice of Vacancy
in House of Commons for Repentigny

OTTAWA, Wednesday, September 6, 2006 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, received on September 5, 2006, the official warrant from the Speaker of the House of Commons indicating that the seat for Repentigny (Quebec) is vacant. After receiving a warrant, at least 11 days and no more than 180 days must pass before a by-election is called, in accordance with subsection 31(1) of the Parliament of Canada Act.

Pursuant to subsection 57(3) of the Canada Elections Act, the by-election must be held on a Monday. If, in the week in which the by-election is to be held, the Monday is a holiday, the by-election shall be held on the Tuesday of that week. Since the date of the by-election must be at least 36 days after the issue of the writ, the earliest that the by-election in Repentigny can be held is on Monday, October 23, 2006.
