There’s a kitchen party in heaven
King of Cape Breton Music succumbs to cancer at 67


He was known as the Godfather of Celtic Music, the King of Cape Breton Music, the Minstrel of Cranberry Lane and the Lord of the Dance. But most people just called him John Allan, or if you’re a true Cape Bretoner, simply “J’nallan.”

John Allan Cameron died early Wednesday morning at age 67 in a Toronto hospital, after a five-year battle with a rare form of bone marrow cancer and leukemia.

Hunter finds body near home of missing Valley woman
Discovery prompts large-scale RCMP investigation


ROBINSON CORNER — A hunter found human remains near Wolfville on Wednesday morning, prompting a large-scale RCMP investigation.

By road, the site is less than seven kilometres south of the Lower Wolfville home of Leslie Ann Conrad, who went missing more than a month ago.

Mayor flip-flops on flap over flinging candy from floats


It looks like the city won’t be taking candies from the mouths of babes after all.

Mayor Peter Kelly said Wednesday that candy will still be allowed at next year’s Holiday Parade of Lights.

Quebec is nation within Canada, PM says


OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper dropped a political bombshell Wednesday by introducing a motion to recognize that Quebecers form a nation within a united Canada.

The surprise move in the House of Commons was a pre-emptive strike against the Bloc Quebecois, which is set to table a motion Thursday that also calls for Quebecers to be recognized as a nation — but not within Canada.

Auditor to investigate Indian Brook spending


INDIAN BROOK — Fisheries and Oceans Canada has hired an independent auditor to investigate the financial dealings of a native fishing company given access to $5 million in federal funding last year.

The news comes on the heels of RCMP confirmation that they are also looking into the operations of Indian Brook Fisheries Ltd., a company started last year by eight of 12 band councillors in the native community. They were later joined by a ninth councillor.

Council not exactly swift off the mark in endorsing wind power

HALIFAX regional council showed a dash of modern — if not exactly ground-breaking — progress this week with a move toward making wind farms possible in the metro region.

I’ll resist the urge to make hot-air jokes; they’re getting old.
