About The Premier

Sworn in as Premier on February 24, 2006, Hon. Rodney MacDonald became the 26th Premier of the Province of Nova Scotia since Confederation. Premier MacDonald was elected Leader of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party at a leadership convention on February 11, 2006.

On June 13, 2006, he was elected Premier by way of a general election. He ran on a campaign of experience, energy, and commitment, and a strong desire to build on the foundation established by the John Hamm government.

First elected to the Legislative Assembly in July 1999 as the MLA for Inverness, he was re-elected in August 2003 and again in 2006. Over the past seven years, his experience in Cabinet has included Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Immigration; and Minister responsible for the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and administration of the Heritage Property Act. As Premier, he now also serves as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Born in Inverness, Nova Scotia on January 2, 1972, Rodney Joseph MacDonald was the second oldest of four children to Alex Angus and Elizabeth Ann MacDonald. Growing up in Mabou, Rodney attended school and participated in numerous extra-curricular activities including hockey and music.

Premier MacDonald showed an early interest in politics, through his father’s work as a local councillor. Upon graduating from high school, he attended St. Francis Xavier University and received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education while continuing to build a career as a professional musician.

His music graced stages throughout Atlantic Canada, Central Canada and the Eastern United States. In 1998 he received two nominations for East Coast Music Awards and was vice-president of GlennRod Music Incorporated.

Before winning the seat in the riding of Inverness in 1999, he taught for the Strait Regional School Board, the Mi'kmawey school at Chapel Island and pursued his Masters in Education.

Premier MacDonald is married to wife, Lori-Ann (Gillis). The couple has one son, Ryan, aged 8.
