Registry of Motor Vehicles

newGoods and Services Tax Rate - Effective July 1, 2006
Effective July 1, 2006, the Goods & Services Tax (GST) rate will be reduced from 7% to 6%. Also, effective July 1, 2006, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and the Nova Scotia Sales Tax (NSST) will be reduced from 15% to 14%.

Therefore, vehicles purchased on or after July 1, 2006 will be taxable at the rate of 14%. Vehicles purchased prior to July 1, 2006 will be taxable at 15%.

newOff-Highway Vehicles Infrastructure Fund Fee - Effective April 1, 2006
As part of the annual off-highway permitting process, an additional $40 will be collected for an Off-highway Vehicle Infrastructure Fund. The fund will be used to fund trail systems and training programs.

new Personalized Motorcycle Plates - Effective June 15, 2005
Nova Scotians will now be able to purchase personalized plates for their motorcycles. Application forms for personalized plates are available at any Registry of Motor Vehicles / Access Nova Scotia location.

new Statement of Insurance - Effective January 1, 2004  
A completed Statement of Insurance form is required for the issuance or renewal of vehicle registration (plate).
