Purpose |
The Natural Products Marketing Council, an agency of the
Nova Scotia Government, is responsible for the administration of the Natural Products Act and Dairy Industry Act. Ten marketing boards are established under the Natural Products Act and the Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia is established under the Dairy Industry Act. These boards are producer elected and the Council delegates or regulates authority to them specific to their farm product.
The Council is a regulatory and supervisory body, a major role of which is
to balance industry interests with the broader public
interest. |

Functions |
The Council provides the regulatory framework as well as
technical support for the marketing boards.
The Council, in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, regulates quality standards for milk that includes lab analysis, inspection and enforcement. The Council also regulates the fluid milk processing sector.
The Council facilitates the development of commodity boards and provides general supervision to these boards.
The Council acts to stimulate and improve production and marketing of regulated products and advises the government on orderly marketing issues. |

Composition |
The Council is composed of members appointed by the Governor in Council. One of the members appointed must be a person recommended by the Nova Scotia Milk Processors' Division of the Atlantic Dairy Council. The Governor in Council appoints one of the members as Chair. |

Work & Experience Requirements |
Members should have experience in community or industry related activities such as service on boards or involvement in industry organizations or businesses.
Members should have extensive knowledge of both regulated and unregulated agricultural production and marketing.
The Chair should have experience in chairing boards or meetings. |

Skills Required |
Members must have: an understanding of the agri-food industry and the public interest supervisory roles of the Council; appreciation for the policy and mechanical aspects of legislation and regulations; ability to think objectively and impartially; strong problem solving and decision making abilities; Good communication skills; a high degree of integrity; ability to deal professionally with confidential/sensitive information; a favourable reputation among their peers.
In addition, the Chair must have: demonstrated leadership abilities; ability
to work effectively with members/staff to set priorities
and general policy direction; ability in leading groups
to consensus decisions; exceptional communication
skills including demonstrated ability to communicate
in public forums. |

Statutory Nomination Requirements |
One of the members appointed must be a person recommended by the Nova Scotia Milk Processors' Division of the Atlantic Dairy Council. |

Remuneration |
Chair:$150/day plus any reasonable/necessary expenses
Members: $100/day plus any reasonable/necessary expenses. |

Anticipated Time Commitments |
The Council meets regularly one day per month.
The Chair should be able to devote up to three days per week to Council duties
when required. Similar requirements are placed upon
some members periodically as the need arises. |
