The Nova Scotia Ramp
Report was first produced by the Nova Scotia Department
of Fisheries and Aquaculture in 1994. It served as a
guide for companies, individuals and other agencies
searching for a suitable ramp for launching their commercial
or recreational boat. It proved to be extremely valuable
and, with approval from the department, it was decided
that it should be updated and placed on the department's
website.
Many of the ramps which currently exist were funded
by programs administered by Nova Scotia Fisheries
and Aquaculture, the Nova Scotia Department of Economic
Development, and the Federal Department of Fisheries
and Oceans. The Nova Scotia Department of Natural
Resources has constructed launch ramps to complement
a range of services offered to recreational boaters
and fishermen. These ramps are located in provincial
parks or campgrounds.
In this report, the term "ramp" refers to a surface
constructed of concrete, timber, or asphalt which
provides direct and unimpeded access to the ocean,
lakes, or rivers and streams. In the above definition,
the term constructed is the key point since boats
are commonly launched along beach frontage, rough
coastline, or anywhere a truck could back a trailer.
The ramps constructed by the Department of Natural
Resources, and located in parks, are constructed of
gravel and therefore are an exception to the above
definition.
This website will take two forms, a graphical version complete with pictures of the ramps and maps of their locations, and a text-based version for those people who do not want to be slowed by graphics. Either form will provide a comprehensive and informative record of a valuable link to our waterways for commercial and recreational use, alike.
