Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture

Fishing Licence: Salmon

Who Needs This Licence?

Anyone 13 years old or older who wants to fish for Atlantic Salmon in provincial waters in Nova Scotia. This includes all fresh water sources, such as rivers and lakes. See Additional Information for exceptions to the licence requirements for residents under 16 years of age.

NOTE: The Maritime Centre is located at the intersection of Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road (the Aliant Building at the foot of Spring Garden).

Application Process:
Applicants must appear in person and provide proof of age and residency to the person issuing the licence. They then fill out the application and pay the fee directly to the authorized vendor or office of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.

If all the requirements are met, the licence is issued on the spot.

This licence is valid from the date of purchase to the close of the salmon season in the year it was purchases. (Note: the salmon season varies from year to year, and is set by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. See Additional Information,below.)

Resident (16 years and over):  $ 36.06
Resident (Under 16 years of age):  $ 11.40
Non-Resident (seasonal):  $ 133.19
Non-Resident (7 Day):  $ 54.26

*Harmonized Sales Tax

Expiry:
This licence is good for one season only. Once it expires, it is invalid, and you have to buy a new one.

Additional Information:
  1. Residents under the age of 13 can fish for salmon in Nova Scotia without a licence, but they must be accompanied by an adult with a licence. Also, the adult has to use their tags to tag the salmon.

  2. Residents under the age of 16 can fish for salmon in Nova Scotia by the same rules as those under 13 (above) -- or, they can purchase their own licence and tags for $10.00 plus HST

  3. Each licence fee includes a $5.00 fee that is deposited into a Sportfish Habitat Fund to be used for volunteer projects to conserve and enhance fish habitat and improve public access. The Fund is administered by Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture . For more information, contact the Inland Fisheries Division, PO Box 700, Pictou, NS B0K 1H0.   4. Seasons and Limits: In tidal or salt-water, which is federal jurisdiction in Canada, seasons and bag limits vary from place to place within the province.
